Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Gets Challenge Mode Update, Mobile and Switch 2 Release

Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Gets Challenge Mode Update, Mobile and Switch 2 Release

A new free update has been released for Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Starring Lara Croft, introducing a brand-new Challenge Mode, additional outfits for Lara, new achievements and trophies, and several optimizations and bug fixes across the trilogy. Alongside the update, the remastered collection has also expanded to iOS and Android devices, and has been released for the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing Lara Croft's earliest adventures to even more platforms.

Originally released in 2024, the remastered trilogy modernizes the first three iconic titles (and expansions) in the series with updated controls, modern platform support, and a number of quality-of-life improvements while preserving the original gameplay and level design. Players can also switch between the remastered visuals and the classic graphics at any time.

With the latest update, the collection gains several new features designed to encourage players to revisit the classic trilogy.

Challenge Mode Introduces New Gameplay Objectives

The highlight of the update is the introduction of Challenge Mode, which adds optional gameplay objectives and modifiers across the trilogy.

These challenges introduce specific conditions or tasks that encourage players to approach levels differently. Some objectives focus on exploration or combat efficiency, while others apply special gameplay restrictions during certain sections.

For players who are already familiar with the original games, Challenge Mode provides a new way to experience classic levels by introducing additional goals without altering the core campaign.

Challenge Mode can be enabled or disabled through the game's menu, allowing players to either experience the traditional gameplay or activate the additional objectives at their own pace.

New Achievements and Trophies

The update also introduces new achievements and trophies tied to Challenge Mode.

These new objectives reward players for completing the various challenges and modifiers introduced with the new gameplay mode. For players who previously completed the original achievement lists when the remastered collection launched, the update adds new goals and incentives to revisit the trilogy.

Completionists now have additional tasks to complete while replaying the classic adventures.

New Unlockable Outfits

By completing achievements, players can unlock 3x10 additional Lara Croft outfits, each introducing gameplay modifiers that alter abilities such as movement speed, diving capability, or combat performance.

Optimizations and Bug Fixes

The update also introduces several optimizations and bug fixes affecting different parts of the trilogy.

Among the fixes are adjustments to various collider issues, improving interactions with certain environmental objects and surfaces during gameplay.

An issue affecting achievements has also been corrected. Previously, The Business is Finished achievement could unlock prematurely after the second level of Unfinished Business. With the update, the achievement now unlocks after completing all levels of the expansion.

Several fixes were also applied specifically to the Steam version of the game. These include resolving a missing user interface element when changing Lara's hair in Photo Mode, as well as fixing an issue in classic graphics mode where The Hand of Rathmore was not appearing at its intended spawn location.

Editor's Note:

While the update adds new gameplay features, it has also introduced several issues that affect parts of the games that previously worked without problems.

Update Developed Without Saber Interactive

While Saber Interactive originally contributed to the development of Tomb Raider I–III Remastered Starring Lara Croft, the newly released Challenge Mode update was not developed by Saber Interactive.

None of the original developers from Saber Interactive were involved in the creation of this update, meaning the new content was produced independently from the original development team. (Source)
